The species Brachyspira aalborgi was originally described by Hovind-Hougen et al. 1982. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 12 in 1983.

The type species of the genus is Brachyspira aalborgi. There are numerous yet‐to‐be characterized brachyspire species. Brachyspires have fastidious growth requirements requiring chemically complex culture media supplemented with blood or serum. The best studied species, Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, requires cholesterol and phospholipid for

Brachyspira is a genus of bacteria classified within the phylum Spirochaetes. [2] [3] [4] Brachyspira species include pathogens in pigs, birds, dogs, and humans. The colon organisms were Brachyspira aalborgi, documented by antigen test; however, due to lack of material, the spirochetes in the liver could not be typed. As 10 of 13 patients recovered or improved after antibiotic treatment with clarythromycin or metronidazole, our conclusion is that Brachyspira may be pathogenic. Three Brachyspira species have been reported to colonize humans: Brachyspira aalborgi, Brachyspira pilosicoli, and the provisionally named “ Brachyspira hominis ” (3 – 7). Although it is unclear whether HIS is associated with clinical symptoms, there is evidence suggesting an association between B. pilosicoli and diarrhea in humans ( 3 , 8 – 11 ).

The second major grouping within the order Spirochaetales are the Brachyspira, which are intestinal spirochetes classified within the family, Serpulinaceae. Brachyspira are large, loosely coiled spirochetes ranging in size from 2 to 13 μm in length and from 0.2 to 0.4 μm in width. Brachyspira is a genus of bacteria classified within the phylum Spirochaetes.

An Australian survey found that B. pilosicoli infection is largely confined to rural aboriginals (15%), with B. aalborgi being less prevalent (5%) but found in In contrast, B. aalborgi occurs more frequently in developed countries, typically in AIDS patients with chronic diarrhea. The pathogenic potential of Brachyspira for humans is controversial. Biopsies show palisades of Brachyspira lining the surface of colonic epithelial cells, which is likely to impair function (Figure 12).

15 Mar 2018 Brachyspira aalborgi is a non-pathogenic commensal and above, the two members of the Brachyspiracea family, B. aalborgi and B. pilosicoli,

The genus contains both important pathogens of livestock as well as commensals. Two species are known to infect humans: B. aalborgi and B. pilosicoli.
